Matt Goldman set up an #umbrella for a member of the Silver Gull Beach Club on Wednesday. The 21-year-old is one of the cabana workers tending a section of this oceanfront summer colony of cabanas near the western tip of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens. “For guys like us, you can’t really get a summer job making better money,” said Matt, who lives in the Bergen Beach section of Brooklyn. He says tips from his summer on the beach help him pay his way through @huntercollege in Manhattan. His duties include serving the Silver Gull’s 2,300 members and tending its 457 cabanas. Matt is determined to be regarded as the most conscientious cabana boy, as well as the top earner. “You learn the ways of the beach chair, and how it sits properly on your arm, and you just get better,” he said. This summer, @george_etheredge is photographing a season at the #SilverGull Beach Club, part of the vanishing world of private clubs in New York City.
