Even as she mourned her husband's death from a rare genetic disorder, Sarah Robertson was comforted by knowing that 6 vials of his sperm were safely stored at the Reproductive Fertility Center. But 10 years later, when Sarah, a nurse practitioner, was ready to have the baby they had both longed for, she got devastating news. All of the vials were missing. Now Sarah and her in-laws are suing the LA clinic and its owner — part of a new wave of lawsuits against sperm banks, highlighting claims of deception and negligence, and adding an array of challenges beyond the longstanding issue of undetected genetic problems. When Sarah first asked for the sperm, according to court papers, the center told her that 5 of the 6 vials were missing. The complaint went on to say that the clinic’s owner urged her to try to get pregnant with the 6th vial, but its manager later emailed that it, too, was gone. “When I got that email,” Sarah said, “I stood up and screamed.” @kendrickbrinson photographed Sarah while on #nytassignment.
