When are peaches in season? The answer is a bit fuzzy, according to @nytfood’s @kimseverson. Recently, the Southern food writer @kathleenpurvis made a peach declaration on Facebook: Peaches, she said, should never be eaten before the 4th of July. Another Southern food writer said the rule applies to North Carolina peaches, not those in Georgia or South Carolina. Texans suggested that their peach season was almost over. Peach fans from the Northeast weighed in to bemoan what is shaping up to be an exceptionally lousy season because of a late frost. Meanwhile, the drought has affected the largest peach-producing state were silent, so Californians were silent. The photographer @andarsawyers captured these freshly picked peaches from Pee Dee Orchards, in Lilesville, North Carolina, a regular summer stop for beach-bound peach lovers.
