#PuertoRico was in the midst of a mass exodus when @erikaprodriguez returned to the island last year. As a photographer, she has been looking at issues of national identity as her homeland — neither a state nor a sovereign nation — grapples with a crippling debt crisis and major social upheaval. Last month, she was watching the congressional discussions on @cspan when the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act, known as Promesa, or promise, was approved. “I don’t know what hurts the most — all the cuts that are coming or that we are spectators of our history without being able to do anything,” she told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #lensblog. “We have no voice. That hurts a lot.” But her pictures don’t depict hopelessness. She recently trained her camera on a friend’s newborn, clad in a diaper reading: “Born at Home.” The baby, Osmar, was born the day after Promesa was signed into law, @erikaprodriguez said, and the image itself holds a promise — “that life keeps going and that it is up to us to decide our future and build the Puerto Rico we want.”
