Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Every photo story that I produce has, at its very beginning, a genesis image. An image that, as a photographer, I immediately connect with, usually because I consider it quite striking or unusual. This image, of an apparently incensed Northern gannet returning home to find a unwelcome neighbour in his living room, was the genesis image for my 2012 @natgeo story on these remarkable birds. This was actually the first time that I’d even seen a gannet and I’d travelled to Southern Ireland, to the privately owned Saltee Islands, where I spent 10 glorious days living alongside these, and countless other coastal birds. This image also typifies to me why I prefer the still image over the moving image because, even though I was there, taking this image, I did not directly experience this intense, split second moment. It all happened too fast, imperceptibly fast, and it was only after looking through the images later that I came across it. Actually, that might be a bit of an exaggeration as it was probably about ten seconds later! All that I directly experienced was, as we say in the UK, a bit of a kerfuffle! A few feathers flew, there was a bit of pushing and shoving and both gannets disappeared behind a rock. I was immediately intrigued and when I looked through the images on the back of the camera I found this. I also like the image because I know how incredibly lucky I was that I never wing-clipped the aggressor but as you can see it was pretty close! So here we have it, a moment that occurred too fast for me to even see, but a nice split second moment, a decisive moment I guess, in the ever remarkable lives of the Northern gannet. Please #followme at @andyparkinsonphoto to keep up-to-date with my images and thank you so much for bothering to read my witterings and for all of your kind and generous remarks, they really are very much appreciated @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeotravel @natgeoyourshot @natgeoexplore @natgeocreative @audubonsociety @andyparkinsonphoto #northerngannet #onassignment #Ireland #SalteeIslands #nature #naturelovers #wildlife #wildlifephotography #animalsofinstagram
