Photo by @amytoensing :: When Usha was 22 she lost her husband and soon after joined thousands of other widows to live the rest of her life in Vrindavan - one of India’s holiest cities and also known as the City of Widows. There are an estimated 40 million widows in India where in some parts of the culture a widow is blamed for the death of her husband and considered bad luck - often by her own family. Many widows flee their homes voluntarily, fearing they’ll be abused if they stay others are cast out.
