Photo by: @andyparkinsonphoto // A mountain hare, resplendent in its white winter coat, sits alert high in the Scottish mountains of Cairngorms National Park. The UK’s only native hare species these astonishing creatures have evolved to endure the most ferocious of conditions. Unlike their introduced cousins, the more wary brown hare, the physical attributes of the mountain hare are smaller in proportion to reflect the hostile nature of the environment where they live. A smaller body with shorter ears helps to conserve precious heat whilst their coat/pelage changes from a summer brown to a winter white, a necessary camouflage against the predatory eyes of the golden eagle. I had lain next to this hare for several hours, waiting for the predictable 30 minute cycle where she would sit up, have a wash, have a nibble and then return to her restful slumber. As is always the case with our wild cousins it is impossible to approach them too slowly, or too respectfully and if you heed this approach then the trust that this species in particular will afford you is astonishing. Sadly they are in decline in Scotland, both due to a warming climate and the ever present threat of the mental sickness that is hunting for pleasure. I could never comprehend the workings of a mind that might do these creatures harm but then I see value and worth in all living creatures and I will continue to give my voice to those with none.
