Photo by @FransLanting // The egg of the largest known bird intrigued me as a symbol. The flightless elephant bird stood ten feet tall and weighed more than 700 pounds. Although extinct for several centuries, its eggs are sometimes still exposed by heavy rains. With an Antandroy man, I created this portrait as a metaphor for this fabled island. It is a place that shows the remarkable innovations of nature evolving in isolation but its fate is now, like the world itself, literally in our hands.
