When the @オリンピック begin in Rio de Janeiro during the first week of August, the eyes of the world will be watching Brazil. The eyes of Brazil, meanwhile, will be watching #telenovelas. @redeglobo, Brazil’s largest free TV channel, will broadcast events throughout the day and parts of the night. But during prime time, @redeglobo will essentially be a sports-free zone. Yes, the opening ceremony will be broadcast live. But interrupt telenovelas between 6:30 and 10:30? No way. There will be breaks for highlights and results, but the schedule won’t change just because the greatest athletic spectacle on earth has come to town. The photographer Lalo de Almeida captured the taping of a scene from “Liberdade, Liberdade” — a telenovela that focuses on the fictional adventures of the daughter of Tiradentes, a real-life revolutionary and martyr — while on #nytassignment in Rio.
