Photo by @Gerd Ludwig. An otherwise trickling brook along Newfound Gap Road is transformed into a rapid stream by a day of heavy precipitation. The Great Smoky Mountains, named for naturally occurring mist-like clouds that frequently surround the mountains, are affected by air pollution from nearby industry, power plants, and cars. The National Park Service works with state agencies to monitor nearby industry to minimize the amount of new pollution produced and carefully monitors the air quality in the park.
