What makes Texas #Texas? From 1836-1845, the state was its own country — the Republic of Texas — and it has long feasted on hyperbole. “But these days,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @mannynyt writes, “Texas does feel increasingly like a caricature of a caricature.” The majority-minority state has become increasingly diverse and nonwhite, as rural Texas shrinks and urban and suburban Texas expand. The tension between what Texas is and what it was has come to define it. People who believe their way of life is under attack are making a kind of last stand by simply being Texan, @mannynyt writes. The photographer @ilanapl, who is based in Austin, photographed this couple embracing at the Houston Rodeo in March.
