“I don’t feel any discrimination in my area, which is mostly Polish. But everywhere you go in Chicago is a different neighborhood and a different race, and everybody kind of sticks to their own people. My area is all Caucasian and I see no blacks at all.” — Librado Chavez, 39, lives in Dunning, on Chicago’s Northwest Side

While Latinos in Chicago generally live in less segregated neighborhoods and attest to experiencing slightly less discrimination, they share some of the frustrations felt by African-Americans citywide. Fewer than 20% feel very safe in the area where they live. As Chicago confronts a daunting array of problems, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ polled residents and found that most agree that the city is off course. A majority of residents believe the police are more likely to use deadly force against black people and that African-Americans and Latinos are usually treated unfairly by the city’s criminal justice system.
