“My neighborhood has lots of gangs, lots of drugs, lots of violence. I’ve been in this area my whole life and it’s gotten worse since I grew up. I liked Emanuel in the beginning because he had programs for youth, summer jobs to keep them off the streets. But he went a whole year without saying anything about Laquan McDonald, and that was terrible.” — Tierra Cooper, 25, lives in Englewood, on Chicago’s South Side, where she’s afraid to send her 7-year-old son outdoors without intense supervision.

6 months ago, protesters took to the streets in #Chicago after the release of video showing a white police officer shooting a black teenager named Laquan McDonald 16 times on a Southwest side street. A recent @ニューヨーク・タイムズ poll questioned residents of the city, which has been upended in recent months by revelations of questionable actions by the police, threats of a teachers’ strike, a school funding crisis and an uptick in violence. Across neighborhoods and races, residents followed the case, and 56% consider the shooting unjustified. This #nytweekender, we’re sharing portraits from #Chicago by @alyssaschukar.
