“You see a lot of guys on corners, 25 or 30 of them, predominantly in black areas, and they are hanging around with nowhere to go and nothing to do, even in the middle of the day. They have no jobs. Closing down so many schools in minority neighborhoods did not help. Emanuel only closed schools in minority neighborhoods and improved schools in white neighborhoods.” — Rose Bishop, 58, lives in Logan Square, on Chicago’s Northwest Side

This #nytweekender, we’re sharing portraits from #Chicago by the photographer @alyssaschukar. A @ニューヨーク・タイムズ poll found that residents of the third-largest city in the U.S. are deeply divided by race, class and neighborhood. 62% of people polled said they disapproved of @chicagosmayor Rahm Emanuel’s job performance. Only a quarter approved. In 2013, his administration oversaw the closing of nearly 50 schools, many in black and Latino communities. Most Chicagoans say they doubt that the mayor cares much about the needs of people like themselves. Visit the link in our profile to learn more results from the poll.
