After battling rough seas and high winds from Turkey, migrants arrived by rubber raft on the jagged shoreline of the Greek island of Lesbos. Fearing capsize or puncture, some panicked and jumped into the cold water in desperation to reach land. In October 2015, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Tyler Hicks took this picture of a young boy who made it, unlike hundreds of others.
