“Deux amies Peulhs.” The Malian photographer Malick Sidibé — who took this portrait of 2 friends from the Fulani ethnic group — died earlier this week. “He’s such an important figure,” @jackshainman told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #lensblog recently. Western collectors discovered Malick Sidibé’s work in the 1990s, after he had turned to camera repair work to earn a living. Galleries began presenting it in Europe and the United States. Malick quickly became, with the older Seydou Keita, Mali’s most famous photographer and an international star. This #nytweekender, we’re sharing photographs by Malick Sidibé, whose work is showing at @jackshainman Gallery in New York until April 23. Visit the link in our profile to read more about his life.
