@abdulnassergharem has exhibited his work in world-class museums and sold pieces at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The 43-year-old is widely considered one of Saudi Arabia’s leading contemporary artists. But you’d never know that from his studio in Riyadh, the Saudi capital. “Even the neighbors don’t know what’s here,” he said with a laugh. That mix of renown abroad and discretion at home is part of life for an artist and social critic in an intensely conservative country like #SaudiArabia. But inside the 15-foot walls that block views into his courtyard, @abdulnassergharem has created an oasis of sorts for a group of young Saudi artists. His own recent works, meanwhile, have a darker edge. As low oil prices have shaken the Saudi economy, @abdulnassergharem has started working with red and yellow oil drums, cutting out triangular quarters so their tops look like giant images of Pac-Man. The photographer @sergeyponomarev took this photo of the artist with a project called, “Prosperity Without Growth.”
