New York’s old bars are supposed to be rich with character. It’s part of their draw: They satisfy the yearning in the modern era to feel the quirks of a simpler time. But Liedy’s Shore Inn, the oldest bar on Staten Island, isn’t given the attention of historic Manhattan counterparts like McSorley’s, Fanelli’s, Pete’s Tavern and Old Town Bar, which prosper under a brand of longevity. Liedy’s, a saloon-like bar with a tin ceiling, opened in 1905 near Snug Harbor, on the borough’s now-neglected North Shore. It first served the local seamen known as Snugs. The North Shore’s harbor culture dwindled in the 1970s, however, triggering a flight to the South Shore, leaving Liedy’s an exotic destination even among some Staten Islanders. The photographer @ryancjones visited Liedy’s while on #nytassignment. Visit the link in our profile to read more. #?
