In the 1990s, Western collectors discovered the Malian photographer Malick Sidibe’s work and began presenting it in galleries and museums in Europe and the United States. He quickly became one of Mali’s most famous photographers and an international star. #MalickSidib, who died this week at 80, is best known for his #blackandwhite studies of popular culture. His documentation of Mali’s postcolonial period portrays smiling, dancing couples, street scenes and young men seducing girls at parties with a sense of newfound freedom and identity. “For me photography is all about youth,” he told @telegraph in 2008. “It’s about a happy world full of joy, not some kid crying on a street corner or a sick person.” He took this photo, “Des chaussures pour aller danser” — which means, roughly, “dancing shoes” — in 1963. This #nytweekender, we’re sharing photographs by Malick Sidibé, whose work is showing at @jackshainman Gallery in New York until April 23.
