Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | For hundreds of years, a beautiful French hilltop village with homes, a church and a bakery could be found where we now see many large WWI mine craters that even today look like the surface of the moon.

This was strategic high ground that had great military importance because it was close to a key supply route leading to the battlefield of Verdun. For nearly four years the French and German armies dug in, attempting to displace the opposing army by blowing up their front line with devastating mine explosions planted secretly from below by digging tunnels beneath No Man's land. These were truly weapons of terror. The explosions were so powerful that soldiers were here one moment only to vanish without a trace the next.

This photograph was taken from the German front line trenches which existed at the end of WWI a century ago.
