“Why are we represented by a mythical monster?” the photographer @kierandodds asked himself not long after he started working on #landofscots, a project exploring identity in Scotland. @kierandodds took this photo of the #LochNessMonster peeking of out of a shallow pond beside the Loch Ness Centre in Drumnadrochit, #Scotland. Over the years, the myth of Nessie — who first appeared, according to legend, in the 6th century and resurfaced in 1933 in a famous photo — has become highly profitable. A University in Inverness, for instance, offered a seminar in “monster marketing,” hoping to help local businesses cash in on tourism dollars. Nessie, @kierandodds said, is a symbol of the deeper stories that can be found in the landscape. “It happens to be the one that has captured the imagination and it brings in the tourists.” This #nytweekender, we’re sharing photos by @kierandodds, who’s based in Glasgow. #lensblog
