What's a New Yorker's cure for a lost button? Consider Tender Buttons, a shop in a tiny townhouse on New York’s Upper East Side. While the shop deals mainly in modern buttons, some of its collectibles are valued in the thousands of dollars. Since the shop opened in its current location in 1968, customers have included Gay Talese (seeking horn buttons for his suits), Julie Andrews (pearls) and Nora Ephron (she bought a set of card suits in red Bakelite). “People come before the dentist, after the dentist,” said Millicent Safro, one of the shop’s owners. “Before the shrink, after the shrink.
