In some of her work, artist #AnneCollier uses appropriated advertisements in a way that is both humorous and instructive. In "Woman with a Camera (Cheryl Tiegs/Olympus 1)" (2008), the eponymous supermodel holds a camera next to her face, a thoroughly nonfunctional position but one that provides an unobstructed view of her fully made-up and coiffed features. She is wearing a fashionably modified version of a professional photographer's shooting vest, indicating perhaps that the camera is being marketed to women—except that the image is not about what the person can do with the camera but rather how she will look doing it. In this and similar photos, we are provoked to wonder who is taking the picture and why.

Can you name #5WomenArtists? We have joined @womeninthearts to celebrate #WomensHistoryMonth and call special attention to the gender imbalance in the art world both nationally and globally. Anne Collier's work is on view now in #PhotoPoetics through March 27. Learn more at guggenheim.org/photopoetics.
