On #StPatricksDay, enjoy #GraceHartigan's "Ireland" (1958) from the collection of @guggenheim_venice. Hartigan, an artist of Irish descent, visited Europe for the first time in 1958 and painted a series of pictures with titles relating to her travels, of which "Ireland" is the largest. Though the painting is without any literal subject matter, Hartigan uses abstraction to evoke a sense of place and her experience of traveling through Ireland. Throughout March we are celebrating women artists in our collections and on view in our exhibitions. Grace Hartigan’s paintings were included in "The New American Painting," an exhibition organized by @ニューヨーク近代美術館, that traveled to eight European cities from 1958 to 1959, making her one of the few women painters to receive a level of exposure comparable to her counterparts in the Abstract Expressionist movement, such as Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, and Jackson Pollock. #5WomenArtists
