When I first came across these massive crustaceans on the remote atoll of Aldabra it wasn’t the creatures 3-foot leg span or 5 pounds of heavily armored body that impressed me most. It was their giant claws, strong enough to easily crush a human finger. As I spent more time with these animals I quickly realized that they were rather shy and not at all aggressive. In fact coconut crabs have always ended up losing when coming into contact with people. Their meat is said to taste sweet like lobster and the species has been eaten to extinction across most its range. Remote Aldabra in the Seychelles is one the last strongholds for these crabs.
