Giant tortoises on Aldabra have to keep cool to survive the hostile environment on this Seychelles atoll. To avoid cooking to death in their own shells tortoises they have to seek out any available shade before the midday temperatures peak at 109 degrees Fahrenheit. Aldabra is a largely flat featureless expanse and there is fierce competition for the few stunted trees that provide shade. There is constant jostling and shell pushing for the coolest spots and often they even sit stacked on top of one another. A few minutes after I shot this photograph the tortoise that earlier had successfully ascended onto it’s “throne” accidentally slid off the it’s “downstairs” neighbors shell and had to begin the battle for shade all over again. Eventually it successfully bulldozed its way underneath the tree and waited until late afternoon before emerging to graze.
