During the stormy southwest monsoon, manta rays travel to a small island called Hanifaru in the Maldives. Upwelling brings nutrients to the surface, turning the water into a rich plankton brew. Microscopic armies of crustaceans (no bigger than your pupil) are the mainstay of a manta’s diet. When plankton concentrations are patchy, manta rays feed singly, somersaulting themselves backward like a dog chasing its tail. However, when plankton densities increase… …they opt for a more collaborative approach. The mantas begin to swim closer together in a unique behavior known as “cyclone feeding”. As they swirl in tight formation, the column creates its own vortex, sucking in and delivering plankton right into the mantas cavernous mouths.
