During #BlackHistoryMonth, we invite you to explore works by African-American artists in our collection. Today we are highlighting “Tar Beach” (1998) by #FaithRinggold, an artist best known for her imaginative, narrative-based quiltworks. This is the first quilt in her colorful and lighthearted series “Women on a Bridge,” which depicts the fantasies of Cassie Louise Lightfoot, the spirited heroine and narrator who on a summer night in Harlem flies over the George Washington Bridge. For Ringgold, this phantasmic flight symbolizes the potential for freedom and self-possession. Says Ringgold, “my women are actually flying; they are just free.” Learn more about this work at guggenheim.org/collection.
