Workers prepped the sand between fights at the Plaza México, the biggest bullring in the world. The photographer @adrianazehbrauskas stood there amid 45,000 spectators — the largest draw in recent memory — to watch the matador José Tomás meet his match on Sunday, his farewell fight. José, 40, is the the embodiment of mystery. While protests, prohibitions and the struggles of the Spanish economy have dealt #bullfighting a financial beating in recent years, José has been considered a kind of savior amid the dwindling spectacle. He seemed determined to pass bulls ever closer to his body, pushing the boundaries of how close a man could get. On Sunday, the crowd was eager to witness the Great One before his bullfighting days were over. Follow @nytimessports to see another photo from Plaza México.
