New York City’s first Afro-American Day parade, held in September 1969, was a moment of pride and solidarity — a much-needed celebration after years of struggle and strife. Seventh Avenue in Manhattan was renamed “the Avenue of the Africans” for the event, and the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ article the following day included a photo of the gathered crowd. This quieter but compelling image by the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Donal F. Holway, however, did not make it into the newspaper.
