The Indian Constitution guarantees equality under the law. But for women facing a patriarchal social order, strict caste rules and centuries of traditions, that guarantee means little. Geeta, pictured here, led a group of women in her village in northern India to defy tradition and take jobs outside the home, supplementing their husbands’ earnings. After the male elders of their caste said women should leave their jobs, Geeta and her friend Premwati fought back. Their appeal to the distant, abstract power of the Indian state would have been impossible, if the women had not been so angry. The photographer @andreabruce took this photo of Geeta walking defiantly through an unfriendly street in her village after she was ostracized for refusing to stop working.
