Photo by @andywcoleman // Sometimes the harsh realities of nature are in full view during a safari. We were watching a pride of lions lazily make their way across the plains when they suddenly spotted a warthog. Two of the lionesses stalked and took down the warthog in just a few seconds. The commotion of the hunt brought the dominant male lion to the scene and he quickly took the warthog for himself. There is a hierarchy in the pride that determines the feeding order. The dominant male eats first and decides if and when others can join in. We saw several lionesses trying to get close to the meal, only to be chased away by the much bigger male. He did allow some of the young cubs to feed, but the lionesses who provided the meal didn't get a chance to eat until he moved to the shade to nap with a full belly. Taken on safari at the #Phinda Game Reserve in South Africa. @natgeocreative @natgeowild
