Kemi, 19 years old, photo by @martinschoeller // For the last ten months I have photographed and interviewed almost two hundred people living in the streets of Hollywood and posted them on Instagram.

I set up my studio next to the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition truck. Ted and Penny Landreth started this coalition 28 years ago and have served a hot meal every night ever since.
Meeting so many people without permanent housing has been a intense and often heartbreaking journey. Their stories have broadened my horizon and my perspective. I came to realize that in ever so slightly different circumstances I could be homeless too. Sometimes it is the result of addiction and/ or bad decisions, but often it just happens to people without a family to call on for support when when life becomes a real struggle.
Talking to young homeless people, like Kemi above, touched me deeply. Most of my subjects were never loved as children, had no guidance and nobody to tuck them in at night.
It is difficult to judge a persons bad choices without having grown up in their shoes. Many of my subjects had traumatic childhood experiences, drug addicted parents, beatings, rape, abandonment,... The common thread is a lack of love and guidance. They live with the sense that nobody in the world cares about them.
Please donate to @gwhfc today, and support their volunteers.
