Glowing // #India, Chikmagalur, Coffee Plantation of the AAA Sustainable development program

She lights candles at dusk as a source of light throughout the house. From one to the other, the flames flicker. They have a flowing movement, rather unstable, seeming as if they would blow out as each breeze passes by. The girl forms a type of shelter with her hands to protect the flame from going out. Patient, attentive, and determined, she protects it until the heat of the flame has entirely melted the wax, leaving nothing but the wick of the candle. I observe the girl for a while, the daughter of farmers, who saw her parents devote their lives to the cultivation of coffee each day with the same kind of consistency and attention she brought to the survival of the flame, while reminding me of an ancient Persian proverb, “ All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of one small candle.” Throughout my journey of encounters from one continent to another, with different actors of coffee production, whether they are seasonal cultivators or the plantation owners, I observed their commitment to the education of the children and the transmission of the common values that essential to this culture.
