Photograph by @remibenali. France, Arles. The Rhône River hides many archaeological treasures like the bronze and marble statues posted last week here. But one is truly spectacular: Introducing the Roman boat Arles-Rhône 3 to instagram! Entwined here by a human flood during its official presentation at the Musée départemental de l'Arles antique in October 2013. A 2000 year old wooden boat, 31 meters long and found intact in the river. This discovery is unique and the boat AR3 has been officially declared a National Treasure by the French Government, meaning that it is a piece as precious for the country as the Mona Lisa or the Venus de Milo. I invite you to follow on my account each weekend the recovery of this stunning piece of European history. The challenges to lift it up, the urgency to protect the wood exposed to oxygen involving at times an unique nuclear process, the reconstruction of the boat and the discovery during the operation of a bounty of objects telling the life of the Romans in France two milleniums ago.
