Photograph by @remibenali. A bronze statue found in the Rhône River at Arles and dated to the 1st century BC. From 58 to 50 BC Julius Caesar conquered Gaul (modern France) with his powerful legions. To see this captive warrior, on his knees, his hand attached in his back is quite moving. A Gaul, a Frenchman, his eyes fierce, the chin up, challenging probably an imminent death. 100 years later, the Roman colony of Arles would build its arenas where the prisoners were executed in front of the crowds. After two millenniums the arenas are still standing there.
