The Sauchie Estate in Clackmannanshire, #Scotland was once owned by Sir James Stirling, a lord provost in Edinburgh who also owned and managed several plantations in Jamaica. The Scottish photographer Stephen McLaren documented the estates amassed by Scottish sugar plantation owners in Jamaica and in Scotland. His project, "A Sweet Forgetting," explores how the vast profits from the slave economy in Jamaica left their mark. In Jamaica, he said, “the people I met had an interest in their backgrounds, but often they hadn’t gotten to the bottom of it. The same is true for myself. I know vaguely where I come from in geographic terms. There’s no neat narrative for people’s past lives.” See more photos on the #lensblog.
