Abbey Hughes, left, Jamie Krantz and Jenna Witman played with Jenna's cat Nutmeg at their campus townhouse at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Like many schools across the United States, St. Mary’s is figuring out how to field increasing requests for comfort animals by students with diagnosed mental health problems. Most students want #cats and dogs. But some schools have had requests for lizards, tarantulas, potbellied pigs, ferrets, rats and guinea pigs. What’s the difference between an emotional support animal and a pet that provides support? It depends less on the animal and more on whether the student has a diagnosed psychiatric disorder and can document that the animal is therapeutically necessary.
