A quarter of active major league #pitchers have had elbow surgery to repair a damaged ulnar collateral ligament. The operation, known as Tommy John surgery, after the first pitcher to have it, leaves players with a crescent-shaped scar. For players, anxiety over having the surgery eventually disappears. The scars do not. Jacob deGrom of the @ニューヨーク・メッツ was at the lowest level of the minor leagues when his injury was diagnosed. “After I had it, I was thinking, What’re they going to think of me? I just got drafted. I hadn’t proven anything,” he told @nytimessports. @jddittmar photographed #JacobdeGrom. Follow @nytimessports or visit the link above to see more from the #TommyJohn series.
