Russia’s nuclear testing left vast subterranean galleries in its wake which are now used as gas reservoirs despite the warnings of scientists. Gazprom’s only safety precaution: the distribution of gas masks in insufficient numbers, and only for adults. Moreover, the cocktail of radioactive residues and liquid gases have been seeping into the water table for years. The consequences are predictably tragic for the population. Here, two brothers wear their masks to simulate an alert. It is not uncommon, over the course of a reportage, to be solicited or asked to witness a situation, an injustice or a tragedy. Also, during a conflict, some wounded show their injuries. However there is a threshold one must not cross: when a mise en scène becomes, not a denunciation, but a bit of theater. I have always worked by the rule to never solicit or create one, however powerful the possibility of an image may be on a photographic level. It is part of my journalistic code of ethics, from which I never deviate.
