Photo by @stevewinterphoto I shot this photo of a hammerhead caught in a net in the waters around Galapagos for #Stern #magazine a long ago. I knew boats were catching sharks for their fins in the area, so I was on the look out for nets strung across the bays where the sharks usually went to feed.I got into the water and saw 3 sharks caught in nets while a school of hammerheads swam by in the distance. We cut the shark out of the net but it was too late. I’m sharing this image - my only try at underwater photography - because my mind has been racing since I saw the movie Racing Extinction - a vital film for our time. 90% of big fish and sharks have disappeared from our oceans, from overfishing and shark finning. 50% of our oxygen comes from oceans and plankton - 50% from forests - where big cats live. Wildlife biologist will tell you - the top predators in any ecosystem are vital for the health of that ecosystem, so if you save the top predator in any ecosystem you save everything underneath them. There is hope and each one of us can make a difference. If you’re in #NYC you can catch it tonight at the Village East Cinema. #LA, #Columbus, #Portland and #Durham, tonight is the last night so check out http://www.racingextinction.com for the a theatre near you.
