Photo: @melissafarlow / @thephotosociety | Extinction has stalked the Przewalski (sh-vahl-skee) horse since the first lead mare scented a warning on the prehistoric wind. While writing Wild at Heart, a September 2015 release from HMH, these ancient horses with teddy bear eyes and brawlers' brains told one of our favorite survivor stories. Przewalkski horses trotted away from North America before their forage froze at the end of the Pleistocene era and made it across the Bering land bridge as humans trekked south to hunt the equines left behind. For a time Przewalkski horses flourished, but they weren’t safe in their chosen territory. In Mongolia, they were hunted for food and they had dwindled to a few far-flung herds when, during World War Two, German soldiers slaughtered an entire Ukrainian herd. By 1945, the last known Przewalski horse was gone from the wild. Thirty-one of the horses still lived in zoos and their value was recognized before they perished. Through artificial insemination, interbreeding with domestic horses and careful conservation, they’ve been re surrected and some have been returned to their chosen homes, even making a comeback in the Chernobyl exclusion zone after the 1986 nuclear disaster. These horses were photographed in the Denver zoo. See @wildhorsephotos for more mustang pictures and stories by @terrifarley.
