#Kenya | Judith Ayoo Olier, 85 other women and 14 men spend their morning in the mud of a drainage ditch. As a part of a local disaster management group, they clear waste of all varieties from the trenches that line roads and fields in the area to decrease the impact of flooding.
Dr. Phillip Raburu, an agronomist and social welfare expert, created the Food for Work Project in rural areas of Kenya to help locals become less dependent upon government aid. He aims to move people toward environmentally-aware independence by tapping into the communal work spirit that has long been a tradition in the region.

Raburu noticed that development work such as this tends to draw mostly women, given their strong yearning to provide for their children, each other and their community.
