Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | This is a small segment of a larger German front line trench, located in the Santerre region of Picardy outside the Somme village of Faÿ, which has been meticulously restored to its original 1914 appearance. Volunteers accomplished this using only the tools from the time of WWI: shovels, pickaxes, buckets and a lot of elbow grease.
Association Le Sapeur Picard (www.santerre20142018.com), working closely with the mayor of Faÿ, France, recently completed work on this site and now welcomes visitors. Historian and author Marcel Queyrat, one of the leaders of Le Sapeur Picard, can be contacted at marcel.queyrat@wanadoo.fr to arrange a visit.
The 100 year anniversary of WWI began last August and extends through 2019.
