Photo: @rezaphotography | #Turkey | I was in Turkey during the month of March. I had already spent several months in the country, wandering around in a culture so close to mine that many of its sights echoed my childhood in Iran. I wanted to gaze at Iran from the border, even from a distance, to touch and stroke it with my hand. I knew that thousands of Iranians had fled the repression of the mullahs’ regime, by crossing into Turkey near this border. As for me, it had been years since I had last seen Iran. But like a meeting that is both desired and feared, I would put off my visit each day. Then came the day. Bravely and without stopping to think, I set forth. As I reached the town of Dogubayazit, my heart began to pound. I was very near the mountain on the Iranian border now. And as I rounded the curve of a small alley that opened out onto a large, flat stretch of land, there it was, towering above the plain, proud and immovable. Its peaks and slopes looked like those I had seen from Iran. But maybe something was missing, some critical detail that would put the finishing touch to my visual reunion with this mountain that dominated the border. Suddenly, I saw them. Two boys passed by, holding a hollow television set. In them, I saw my brother, Manoocher, and me, when we were children, accomplices in our games as in the dreams we had for our future. + Manoocher and I share the same passion for acting as witness, using our cameras to record wars, conflicts, and other disturbing world events. In the name of that passion, we both took the road of exile.
