A labor shortage in the Thai #fishing industry is primarily filled by using migrants, mostly from Cambodia and Myanmar. Men who have fled servitude on fishing boats recount beatings and worse as nets are cast for the catch that will become pet food and livestock feed. For a story about the violent, unregulated world of fishing boats in international waters, @adamjdean and the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter Ian Urbina spent a couple of days aboard a Thai fishing boat with a Cambodian crew. Living quarters were cramped, and men slept for short periods between hours of work. “There’s really noisy engine vibrations,” said the photographer @adamjdean, “and at nighttime there are rats and cockroaches going around, which doesn’t seem to bother them, but it’s pretty unpleasant.” We will share more photos from this story in the coming days.
