Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | A dramatic 47 day battle occurred here at Montfaucon in the Argonne Forest at the very end of WWI. Behind this monument are the ruins of a centuries-old church where German troops held the summit of this hill overlooking the surrounding French countryside.

Photographed on a cold November night last year while on assignment for the New York Times, the eerie silence made a once violent place feel peaceful. It’s impossible to imagine the horrors that happened here almost 97 years ago.
