No books for me at this point of the story in Chinguetti but four poets dressed in kaki wearing pistols and kalashnikovs. The military police is looking for me. I can't be in this restricted area that is too close with the frontier to Mali. I am showing to the soldiers a recommendation letter from the UNESCO but the officer doesn't seem to care and wants to confiscate my photo equipment "until further notice". I tell him that my cameras are a part of myself and that he should put all of us together behind bars. But in doing so I advise him to call the French Embassy and suggest that if he is making a mistake he will end up in the desert! The lieutenant laughed and asked me to stay within Mohamed's walls and not use my equipment. That was a fair deal. I lost two days of work but I am sure that day I saved my rugged Nikon F4 and faithful Leica M6 which have accompanied me for years unto the digital age. My film cameras are still there, in my own humble library, between a leather bound 100 Years National Geographic index and a book from my Master, photographer Ernst Haas, the first to experiment and work seriously color photography. This story keeps going each day as a little novel on my feed and you are welcome for joining @remibenali.
