#Egypt #Cairo, Alazhar Mosque

Central Cairo is a teeming, noisy place, busy day and night. Muslim pilgrims come from all over the world to Al-Azhar Mosque, one of the oldest universities in the world, to meditate and study. In the adjoining Al-Hussein Square, beggars, passersby, believers, and tourists weave past one another in a strange ballet. The oppressive heat and congestion of Cairo often disorient people. Among the few places of refuge here in the center of the city are Al-Hussein Mosque and the famous Al-Azhar Mosque, a street away. The West tends to think of a mosque as being the image of a militant Islam. Yet any curious but respectful traveler who enters a mosque outside of the hours of prayer will be struck by the serenity that emanates from it. Those who go there for a pause from the hurry of their daily lives will share a moment of calm in the home of a tolerant God, who will meet their expectations, whatever they are. And those who are weary in body and soul will find a haven of peace. Often, a mosque will have a jar full of fresh water available to quench a worshipper’s thirst. Above all, a mosque is a place of vibrant life.
