Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | These are side-by-side German bunkers carved into this rock face on the Hartmannswillerkopf battlefield in the Vosges mountains of Southern Alsace.

In September, 2014 this photograph was featured in a New York Times Lens story about my discovery of A Hidden World of WWI. The one hundred year anniversary of WWI began in August of 2014 and runs through June 30th, 2019.

Between 1871 and the end of WWI, the Alsace region of France was largely in German hands. The Germans believed that they would occupy this land forever and created structures in stone that would last a long, long time. But at the end of WWI, Alsace was returned to France.

This remarkable site is open for all to see.
